Poland has known many centuries of political and religious struggle, but it is also a country of unexpected beauty, not least at Krakow, where the late Pope John Paul II was once Archbishop. This lovely city survived World War II virtually undamaged and retains a charm and elegance reminiscent of its colourful past as the ancient royal capital of Poland.
